That's a good method!
This is useful information--it indicates that, in fact, WU is giving correct
information--the patch installer (I think not the patch itself) is not
properly indicating failed installations.
Applying the patch manually--which is usually an option--does the job.
I suspect the installer keeps a log which might have alerted us about this
failure, but I haven't looked into this at all.
