question for Mamabear &/or qualified helper

I have been reading the posts on spyware advise-You must
like ad-aware (lavasoft) but upon reading I can see that
you recommend doing something with ref files or webupdate
before doing the installation or something like that. I
am super novice on this and went to the c/net download
website to get info-I read the reviews of both spybot and
ad-aware-Its kind of scarry, to me, because there were
alot of complaints of files being removed that should not
have been removed/ then they have to go back and
reinstall stuff and its a hassle (they stress it is for
beginners; which is what I am)-
So which one is better for a super beginner like me and
if you DO reccomend Lavasoft, what is the extra advice
you were refering to that should be done AND how. thanks
