Well, I do kind of side with the OP and the millions of other people who are
overwhelmed by the number of updates and the significant failures the
updates cause. It would seem that the Blaster patch failed to install
correctly in quite a high percentage of cases, and we had less than a month
to do so before the worms and other attack tools were released. Even if you
just limit it to critical updates, it's still a lot of patches and a lot of
patching related failures.
You could say this is not a Microsoft problem by mentioning the number of
open source updates released, but you could also counter that this IS a
Microsoft problem because they're still leaving unnecessary things enabled
in Windows 2003 [like WSH, AFAIK, and VBA in Office] that are very very very
well known to spread viruses and other security problems.
