If another NG is the appropriate place for this Q, please let me know.
Nothing about MDAC turned up anywhere in a quick frisk.
Some confusing results as I attempted to learn more about MS03-33 and
particularly when I downloaded and ran the MDAC Component Checker.
BACKGROUND
1. In February, I downloaded & installed MDAC 2.6SP2, or at least I thought
I had.
2. Although the MDAC CC found numerous erros and warnings, I do not receive
error messages or any indications that programs are having problems because
of any MDAC issues.
MDAC CC ANALYSIS
When the Checker had finished I briefly got a message saying something to
the effect of "The closest version to what is running is 2.6 (2.60.6526.3)".
As I now look at the MDAC Component Checker window, the Summary Report
indicates 3 items which are "errors" and 6 which are "warnings", all of
which relate to DLL files. Specifically:
Item Name Item Type Error String
ERRORS
msdaps.dll COM Key not found
="HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0997A571-128E-11D0-9F8A-00A0C9A0631E}\InProcServe

ISSUES
1. I have read the HELP files that seem to apply. (Like many MS HELP
files, they were written with little or no view of the intended audience and
assume literacy and experience in areas such as MS-DOS which are far beyond
the ken of the average Windows user.) I am assuming that I will have to
"remove" the current version and "reinstall-reconfigure" MDAC. Am I correct
in that assumption?
2. HELP suggests that I can run the the removal process "unattended" using
the last analysis that was run on the computer as the version to remove. Am
I correct in thinking that the "simple" or "basic" analysis which I ran is
sufficient, or did the writer perhaps forget to mention that "unattended" is
only an option if a "complex" analysis had been done?
3. Is the last analysis automatically saved? Am I correct in thinking that
I need pay no attention to the HELP section dealing with "Taking a snapshot
of
Your Installed MDAC Version"? I ask this, of course, because the HELP
section dealing with 'attended' removal gives explicit instructions to
"Select Scan your machine. Do not perform an analysis".
4. Assuming that I CAN do an Unattended removal, the HELP section
cheerfully neglects to talk about reinstallation or reconfiguring. Do I
just go And download & install teh version I want once again.
Way over my head. Any assistance greatly appreciated.
