I recommend it on a personal machine, never had problems with disabling it.

Failing that, block the port on the firewall.

These Windows 2000 services are started:

   COM+ Event System
   DHCP Client
   DNS Client
   Event Log
   Kerio Personal Firewall
   Logical Disk Manager
   Network Connections
   PGPsdkService
   Plug and Play
   Protected Storage
   Remote Access Connection Manager
   Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
   Removable Storage
   Security Accounts Manager
   System Event Notification
   Telephony
   Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions

Works fine for me, I can even disable mor eof those I dont need. Do you see
messenger, not a single app doesnt work with it disabled. If an app wants
to communicate with me on my DESKTOP machine, it can use a dlgbox or the
event log.
