I am running XP Pro and have always installed service packs, critical
updates and appropriate Windows updates as soon as I am notified of their
existence. The Windows Update site currently reports that there are no
current updates for my computer.
Recently, I read about MS Baseline Security Advisor so installed and ran it.
The results indicate "4 security updates are out of date or could not be
confirmed" and are divided into two catagories.
The first, "Security updates that are out of date", has one update
flagged -- the reason: the file in question has a file version that is
GREATER that what is expected. Since this would seem to indicate a new
file, I'm wondering if it's really a problem.
The second category, "Security updates that the tool cannot confirm as
installed on the scanned computer". There are 3 listed with the reason:
"Please refer to Q306460 for a detailed explanation." Here is the summary
from that KBase ariticle:
"The Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) determines the installation
status of a computer patch or security update by evaluating specific
registry keys, file versions, and file checksums that are associated with a
specific security update. There are some instances where MBSA cannot
determine the patch installation status because the detailed file and
registry key information is not available for the specified security
bulletin or patch. A note message that is similar to the following note
message is generated in instances where the MSSecure.xml data file does not
contain this information: " and then lists the 3 security bulletins that
were flagged by MBSA.
So, my assumption is that I don't have a problem here but would like to hear
that from someone who knows more about MSBA and Updates than I do.
Thanks........please remove additional "@" if replying by email.
