Can someone explain what a bridge is and how it differs from a switch

One of my laptops running MS XP Pro has in the Network
Connections folder a Network Bridge. I used to set my
WINS settings under local connections (properties) but
now the bridge seems to hold all this information for my
connections. I'd like a link to know what exactly this
bridge is doing, as I have to set a specific WINS setting
for my VPN to work.
