security downloads from microsoft

I am very new to the internet and am a bit overwhelmed by
the amount of information and stuff there is. Any way I
was looking through the micro soft website and it said i
can get my win 98 o/s updated with the latest stuff so i
let them do a scan of my system and then chose to download
what they gave me.It was a bunch of security stuff that
seemed like it was important. Now i have got an
unsuccsesful download and a problem connecting to my
server. I hope i have given enough info. Also i left for
work when it started downloading and my wife said that it
just stopped after about 40 min to go from 1hr 15min
download. I just want my computer to be clean from
uneccesary stuff and also have the latest protection.
please tell me what to do next
