Jenna,
I have answered your post in microsoft.public.security.virus newsgroup
dated 7/03/03 9:18 p.m.
This is a copy of it:
Try the following: Remember nothing can stop a determined hacker, but you
can try to stay one step ahead by checking out these sites. Most are free
for home use. Just install them cleanly; make sure your present AV is off
for the time being, close all open programs while doing the download and
install. It might in some cases be wise to shut your firewall off for the
time of the download.
For Spyware- Spybot S&D
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
For spyware- SpywareBlaster
http://download.com.com/3000-2144-10196638.html
For Virus- AVG anti virus
http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm?session=720390e775e1da9d364e81e02c1d6b00
For undesirable adware- Ad Aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
For online scan of parasites
http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm
For online virus scan-Trend Micro
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Firewall- ZoneAlarm (free trial period)
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/comparison.jsp
To get a good newsgroup newsreader (use outlook express)
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/community/newsgroups/setup.asp
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/support/kb/articles/q182/1/67.asp
http://users.westelcom.com/rogersr/setupoe.htm
http://www.infornews.com/MSOE.asp
http://www.iup.edu/helpdesk/service/pc/software/outlookexp/usenet/newsfaq.shtm
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm
That ought to do for starters.
After you install the Ad-aware, spybot, SpywareBlaster, and AVG anti virus,
you should then run the updates for each program so as to be loaded with the
most up-to-the-minute info. This will help to send the "bad guys" packing.
Also, make sure that your system clock is correct, if it is off by a
substantial
amount, it can affect your ability to access the windows update site.
I hope this helps you. Please post back to this thread.
