Ha! Now I really *am* confused!
OK, well firstly let me assure that this is *not* a joke -
I'm an ordinary member of the public, experiencing genuine
problems with my pc - I've only used these newsgroups once
before.
I'll try & provide more info, as best as I can recall, re
the problem.
The first (and persisting) symptoms are problems on start
up. The MS Office shortcut bar does not respond & the
system doesn't finish loading properly - the hour glass
icon appears (and remains) if you hover the cursor over
the start button or the Office shortcut bar.
Then, by using ctrl/alt/del, I can end the shortcut bar
running (and hence regain normal use of the cursor) but
icons in the system tray are erratic - e.g, the clock
doesn't appear, then it does much later, the icon for
being connected to the net sometimes/often doesn't appear,
etc. etc.
When I first experienced the problem, I ran 'Trend Micro's
Housecall' - it did find a virus 'BKDR_RSBOT.A' which had
infected ms.app. It couldn't clean it & suggested I delete
the file which I did - my pc then loaded properly.
Later, the problem recurred. I ran a search for
files/folders modified or created during or just before
the 'problem' period - the only file which wasn't
accounted for (i.e, other than e-mails/docs which I'd
written or e-mails from ppl I knew & trusted)
was 'logon.exe' - this is why I believed it to be a bad
file.
Does this throw any new light on the subject?
Thanx,
Wayne.
