I have received to emails today from unknown recipients
today. Both of these emails contained an
attachment "your_details.zip". When saved the file saved
as "1_multipart_xF8FF_2_your_details.zip" and contained a
file called "details" 85Kb. The OS (Windows 2003)
recognizes this file a being a shortcut to an MS Dos
program. There is no extension on the file and when I
change the extension the OS still recognizes it as a
shortcut to MS Dos program. This file is actually a .pif
file, however even with show file extensions on this file
still does not show the .pif extension. Moreover, if the
file is renamed as a .txt or other extension the OS
displays the file as details.txt but in reality it is
details.txt.pif which will be executed if double clicked
or entered.
Why are these extensions hidden and how do I show
it. Allowing these extensions (pif and scr) to be hidden
by Microsoft is a contributing factor in the "fooled you"
aspect of virus implementation.
