It's typical to use a firewall and NAT with private IP address ranges.
these private ranges are not routable on the internet and MUST go through a
NAT device in order to reach the internet. This can make it more difficult
for compromises to occur in some cases, and also the use of the NAT device
can help you have more granular control over what ports and IP addresses are
open. With no firewall or private NAT space, any and every port on your
computers with publicly routable internet IP addresses is potentially
reachable and usable without restriction to and from the internet. NAT in
itself is not a firewall, but is useful.
