Ian,

To some degree, yes - you are in it a bit. Firstly, there really is no
reason to move it off of the domain account as the domain account can
interact with your home network with no problem.

The issue that you have now is that the laptop cannot be integrated back
into the domain (IOW - rejoin the domain) until it can contact a domain
controller for the domain. In some cases, via dial-up or cable VPN, this
might be possible. Not always - but sometimes.

It shouldn't be necessary to involve a domain administator as, by default, a
user can join up to 10 computers to a domain. All that will be needed is
the name of the domain and that elusive conection to a domain controller.
