It is not impossible; however, writing to CDs requires special
equipment (a "cd burner"), and only special types of CDs (CD-R and
CD-RW) can be written to.

That said, I don't know of any application software that ships on
writable media and backs up your data to the CD. It is highly
unlikely that the CD you lost contained any of your friend's personal
data. If your friend does not have a CD Burner in his/her computer,
it is impossible that it contains information about your friend. If
the application CD is not writable, it is impossible that it contains
information about your friend.
