Unwanted messenger pop-ups

I keep on getting nasty pop up meggages when using
various programmes - can anyone please tell me how to
disable these as they are most annoying and may i say
mostly very distateful!!!
Any practical help on eliminating these would be greatly
appreciated!! ;-)
