Use a firewall. There are free ones listed here:

If you are using AOL, you will need to contact AOL or go to their web site
to see what firewalls if any work with AOL. If they say "none," then you
really need a new internet service provider.

Disabling the Messenger service is something that is often suggested..
however, doing this does NOT make your computer any more secure.
