Allow me to compliment you on the very complete notes you took. That's very
very helpful when troubleshooting something like this.
This isn't really a security problem, so I would recommend posting the
question in one of the Windows newsgroups for Windows Millennium Edition,
such as "General Information" or "Software." Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/ if you don't know what I'm talking
about.
Most of that seems normal to me and is probably due to your choosing step by
step confirmation instead of 1. Normal which is what I would always
recommend for you. [Anything other than 1 Normal is a special temporary
troubleshooting mode that will not give normal use of your computer.]
[Scanreg and the unknown driver installation can be normal as well.]
The one error message that doesn't sound completely normal is the
SURegCreateKey message. [Searching www.google.com/advanced_group_search
and www.google.com for SURegCreateKey turned up a few possibilities...
generally that error message seems to be associated with an install program
that fails to install something or a corruption somewhere in the Windows
registry that necessitates removing something or reinstalling Windows.]
Unless you just installed new hardware that you could remove, trying to
restore a previous copy of the registry might be something to try, if ME has
made a previous copy of the registry. If that fails, reinstalling Windows
and all the other software on your computer seems to be the usual next
recommendation.
Beyond this information, it's difficult to troubleshoot this over the
internet. Really, if you are confused and frustrated about computer
troubleshooting such as this, I would really recommend taking the computer
to a friend or a computer repair shop that you trust. Maybe there's a
computer club or computer support resource at your school? Many of the
major electronics chains do computer repair. Last time I checked, Circuit
City in the US only charged like $25 to check out your computer and the
charge was dropped if any repair work was done.
Whatever happens, you definitely DO want to back up your important data
files regularly to another location like a CD Burner, floppy disk, etc.
Your hard drive can crash at any time. Be sure to mention to anyone looking
at your computer that you have data on the computers that you don't want to
lose. If possible, tell them what and where the files are exactly.
If you continue getting the SURegCreateKey message when you try rebooting,
the following information might be useful to you or someone else who looks
at your computer:
