Mark,
There's some good, free software:
I use PurgeIE ( http://www.purgeie.com/ ) to manage my
cookies, and some other clutter on the computer. Get to
know it.
I also use AVG Antivirus from Grisoft. Zone Alarm from
Zonelabs is a firewall. Antivirus and firewall is a
basic, computer-security combination.
Ad-Aware and Spybot-Search-and-Destroy eliminate spyware
from your computer.
You can also search your hard drive for any file that
responds to *.tmp , *.chk , and ~*.* (tilda-star dot
star). Any of this stuff can be deleted. It's something
I always do before defragmenting my hard drive - another
contributor towards hard-drive-health.
My ZoneAlarm keeps a temp file (*.tmp) open, so that file
refuses to be deleted, even if I try. No problem.
Otherwise, the rest can go without a fight.
Best luck,
-Neil-
