Henry,

Scroll down a couple of posts, to "The latest Jscript
Version."

Microsoft is having trouble with their latest critical
update. Sounds like you're stuck in the same loop as the
rest of us. Same "Visual Basic Support" message. Same
problem with Windows Update saying that you need the
update, even thought you did it 5 minutes ago.

I followed the documenation links from the Update page.
Found this:

Instructions
------------
The update available from this page is for JScript 5.6 on
Windows 98, Me and NT 4.0. To determine which version of
JScript is on your machine:

1. Open the Windows Explorer

2. Navigate to the Windows\system32 directory

3. Right click on jscript.dll and choose "Properties"

4. Choose the "Version" tab

The version will be the first line of information. For
example, after this patch is installed it will be
5.6.0.8513. If your version is 5.1 or 5.5, please use the
appropriate link under Related Resources on the right side
of this page.

On my computer, I had to run Find for jscript.dll. I
found it in my windows\system folder, not in the
windows\system32 folder like the instructions said it
would be. I checked the version, and it was updated to
5.6.0.8513, so something correct happened during the
Windows Update.

A little basic troubleshooting, and I pasted a copy of the
jscript.dll into the windows\system32 folder, where the
documentation suggested it ought to be. Restarted the
computer, ran Windows Update, and it still wanted to run
the same update, again.

I better go remove that copy. An extra .dll won't make
too much trouble, but it's not doing any good.

I would simply hang out, and give this update a rest until
MS straightens it out. It would be nice to know a webpage
where we can check that this problem has been fixed.

The documentation said that instead of downloading an
update, it would be sufficient to disable all the ActiveX
controls in Internet Explorer > Security > Custom level

It must be pretty embarrassing for MS. These ActiveX
controls only work on I.E., with pages written for I.E.
It's a special feature from MS, and it turns out to be a
security problem. Then, their fix is screwed up.

Personally, since my Jscript.dll is showing the new
version, I will assume that I have properly downloaded the
security update, and I'm safe. It appears to me that the
real problem is that Windows Update is having trouble
realizing that the update has already been properly
installed.

So I'm going to leave my Active X controls (if Marked Safe
or Signed) set to "Prompt," which causes a million
requests to run scripts per day, but I'm not going to
disable them. As usual, I select "Disabled" for Active X
controls "not marked as safe" or "unsigned."

When the update works correctly, I'll change the Safe and
Signed ActiveX controls to "Enable." The unsigned and
unsafe ActiveX controls will always remain "Disabled."

Whatever Unsigned and Unsafe means.

-Neil-

PS. To know Win98II is to love Win98II
PPS. I've run around the same problem on a WinXP
computer, too.
