Mark has given you good pointers about firewalls. While you are deciding
which you want out of the choices he suggests, turning on the built in XP
firewall may stop some "classes" of pop up ads, so you might try doing that.
When you install another firewall turn the XP one off - don't run more than
one together.
As for other kinds of pop up ads, these can come from spyware and a spyware
scanner/removal tool such as Ad Aware or Spybot can take care of these. Also
some pop up ads come from the people who own the web pages you are browsing.
A pop up ad blocker can stop these. Meaya's pop up ad filter is an example
of one of these.
