Security Risk?

Why is Remote Registry Service up and running on my Windows 2K Pro machine
on a regular basis. No dependent services and or Depend On services are
referenced in it's properties, but it is always running.
I have two questions:
1) Why should it continue running?
2) Is it a service created by Microsoft or a third party vendor?
3) Where can I get a COMPLETE list of all possible running services for
WIN2K & XP from Microsoft Corp, which I know I can trust.
