I've got the same sort of thing here.
I've been confused about just running the SP3 Setup or running it as an
"upgrade" - every SP I've ever seen *is* an upgrade, but running without
specifying "upgrade" creates a new database? I'm no SQL Server master,
obviously, but it seems unnecessarily confusing.
My computer also insists (osql -L and SqlMangr) that there is an MSDE
installation on my machine using a previous network name for my machine (had
to change my machine name for ATT cable setup). Besides the fact that the
old database is listed, nothing can connect to it since it doesn't exist.
So, maybe the SP3 is being applied somehow to this non-existent database?
