Stan,

I agree with what Karl and Alun have said, but would add a number of
points:

1) It is best not to read the e-mails in a HTML type email reader as some
of the spam includes embedded images which indicate to the spammer
when the email sent to your specific e-mail address has been read, thus
confirming a "live" email address.

This is important to the spammer, as many e-mail address lists may have
been compiled with addresses from several years ago and many will no longer
be in use. If a spammer can get confirmation that your e-mail address
accepts
e-mail and that e-mail is read, he can target or sell your address.

I use a free application called e-prompter (http://www.e-prompter.com) to
vet all the e-mail that comes into my accounts. It allows me to delete the
e-mails before they get loaded onto my computer, and view them in a text
only manner. It is also useful for spotting and deleting e-mail borne
viruses
and I have spotted several and deleted them before they were evr on my
computer.

It also allows me to sensor messages going to my children. My teenage
son has enough on his plate without being invited to SexyCynthiaSupa
web cam or that with the application of this new revolutionary cream
he could have bigger breasts.

I would pay money for e-prompter if it wasn't free :-)

2) There are programs such as MailWasher which allow you to set filters
to regect or bounce e-mails that are probably spam. I have never used it,
as the same sort of filtering is built into my ISPs mail software (on their
server!) though I know people who recommend it highly.

3) Don't place your e-mail in a public place. If the address after your name
below is your real e-mail address, then spammer will be able to get it.
People
have written programs that trawl through newsgroups such as this extracting
email addresses. The e-mail addresses these programs gather are then used
for spamming, or sold to people to use for spamming.

It is common to "munge" in some way your e-mail address such that the email
harvesting robots can't recognize it, but humans can. Typical this is don't
by
adding an obvious phrase in to the address eg peter@wolf.com could become
peter@NOSPAMwolf.com, peter@asdfwolf.com etc, then a note in the
message describing what needs to be removed to send the email.

I personally have a completely bogus email address! You can't send an
e-mail
to me - and nor can a mail harvester get my address.

Regards,

Mike
