You really need a firewall. You can choose to disable the Messenger service
as some of the other posts here may recommend, but if this is the only step
you take, hackers can enumerate a list of the login IDs and shares on your
computer and start guessing passwords and logging on. Firewalls such as
www.sygate.com are free, so there's no excuse for not using one. More info
