security dongle adapter

I'm trying to find out information about using a security
dongle adapter key(hooks to the parallel port) for
software in windows XP professional. I was told by the
software vendor for my applications that windows 2000 and
windowsXP will not be able to read the key. Can anyone
shed some light on this matter, or if there is a
workaround.
