Hey all. I'm the lead dev guy for an ISV that distributes
our installation via the web. Where possible, we let
users install our product using an embedded, authenticode-
signed .cab file containing our installer. For non-IE
users, and generally as a backup, we also have a page that
simply lets people download our installer as a self-
extracting .exe.
In the past few days, I've started getting reports of
ominous warning messages from people using the second
install option. A screencap is attached. It looks as
though the latest patches to IE 6 have totally changed the
user experience for downloading exe files from the web.
Anyone have any info on this? I've tried code-signing the
exe without noticable results, which is odd and annoying,
as that's what authenticode is for, right? Anyway, any
other approaches people out there use for getting
installers on peoples' machines without nastygrams from
IE? Anyone know a way to make IE pay attention to the
signature on the file?
Thanks!
