Beth - this may not be the answer you wanted to hear, but I think this is
the sort of program that could best be solved by getting a consultant on
site who can help with this sort of thing. Theres a wealth of information
needed to make much headway with this kind of problem which it's just not
easy to do via newsgroups.

Having said all that...
If you have someone on site who is happy with the mechanical aspects of
working with computers, is it possible for them to transfer the hard disk
from the backup computer to another computer. Depending on the operating
system in use on each computer it might, just might, be possible to read the
files on it this way.

In order to identify the operating system at least, most operating systems
tell you what they are during the start up sequence. If you've been given a
way of safely shutting down this backup computer and restarting it, perhaps
you can do that to gather more information about what kind of operating
system we're dealing with here. If you notice anything about SCSI or IDE as
well during the start up sequence, jotting down that if you have time may
prove helpful too.
