No you are not better off not downloading security updates.
It is recommended to always reboot before a Windows update to ensure
that you have a clean "boot" prior to a WU. What three security updates
did you download? Do you remember? Can we target which one[s] caused
the issues? What exact error messages did you have? When you say you
had no system...what do you mean?
Life on the internet means that we must live with security updates. I
get them also on the RedHat Linux that I have. They are a fact of life
while living on the Internet.
