Any encryption based on the same key used for encryption and decryption -
codebooks are of a good example.
Usually symmetric key encryption requires much less computiong resources
than public key encryption: therefore, usually session keys are exchanged
using public key encryption, and data stream are encrypted using symmetric
key algorithm.
