Dont' know if this suits your needs, but IP Sentry for $100 can monitor a
lot of stuff on your network to see if it is up or down. Freeping is free
but just does pings.
If snort is too complex for you to learn, BlackIce and Sygate can function
as IDS and are simpler to configure. running an antivirus program and a
file checker like languard file integrity checker from www.gfi.com is also a
good idea. FIC is not the most secure option out there, but is free.
