If your web browser knows your email address, such as if you use Internet
Explorer and you have your email address set up in Outlook Express, I
believe IE gives out that email address to any web site that asks for it.
Signing up for email newsletters or a free web-based email account gives you
spam as well. And I've heard that some spammers scan email servers or send
out email to email addresses with random combinations of letters and numbers
to determine a list of the email addresses out there. It's pretty hard to
avoid spam nowadays.
