Not sure if you have any kind of McAfee "firewall" as part of that, nor did
you mention whether "all of my MS programs" really meant programs that try
to access the Internet like IE OE etc.

Perhaps there is a firewall component that is set in "vicious" mode and is
blocking all programs that are not already in a list of allowed programs...
