The excellent Microsoft Windows 2000 Registry Handbook (by
Jerry Honeycutt, published by Que, ISBN 0-7897-1674-7)
says this about logging in automatically:

Windows 2000 requires a username and password if you
configure it to connect to a network. It also asks for a
username and password even if you don't connect to a
network. Change the following value entries [or add them
if not present-SDG] under
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon so
that you can log on to Windows 2000 automatically without
retyping your credentials:

[note - The registry path to the following entries was
under "\Windows NT," NOT under "\Windows" on my Win2000
computer.]

DefaultUserName Set this string value to the username you
use to log onto Windows.
DefaultPassword Set this string value to the password you
use to log on to Windows.
AutoAdminLogon Set this string value entry to 1 to
enable automatic logon, or set it to 0 to disable
automatic logon.

Warning - Always make a backup of the registry before
making any alterations to it. (Select Registry, Export
Registry File.)

Warning - The string values are saved as plain text -
meaning that other people could read the entries in the
registry and ascertain your password.

Warning - Anybody can walk up to the machine and get onto
the network! We use this on an old NT 4 voice mail
server - but it is located in a secured server room!
