I am concerned for those who do NOT know about these things!

You ask why I'm making this 'public' (though few will bother coming here
unless they have their own personal crisis - and thus not be concerned about
the greater good of mankind. If I was in control of that group (instead of
it being censored) perhaps I would stay there. Newsgroups have no interest
for me other than as a vector to find those who wish us harm.

For example, this post of mine has not appeared yet at:
news.dogagent.com (boater.dave) Perhaps it will today. :)
If others are at all interested in this, it may be best to read the earlier
items first (from the bottom up!)

David

Well - a surprise at each and every turn! Fortunately for us all, the good
guys really do outnumber the bad.

I hope you've read them all, Li. I've been studying this kind of 'stuff' for
years now. The articles are good, but I saw nothing new to me.

You said "the ones searching for folks who cause this kind of harm certainly
aren't announcing that they're checking out certain private servers for the
perpetrator's". They might just not be announcing it , Li but they may well
be doing it. (I have a feeling, though, that you may have been being
somewhat cynical here!)

When you tell me something, anything, that you *really* know about Peter
Foldes (or is it Derek Feldman?) I'll cease worrying. All I know about him
is that he has highly sphisticated 'gear', knows the answer to everything
(at any time of day or night) celebrates Passover and lives in Canada. I
expect you have full details of his name, address and phone number and the
type of business that he's in. I do hope so. Maybe even have a photograph of
him.

On the other hand, he could be trying to harm us.

If you are *sure* he's not, please just tell me the truth about him.

You know everything there is to know about me (except that *I* never entered
my details on a dating website looking for a 'bit on the side')

David

these are all good articles to read and understand how some things
happen\work.

How cheaters are winning at online games like World of Warcraft
http://www.networkworld.com/nlvirusbug86031

The new book "Exploiting Online Games" by Greg Hoglund and Gary
McGraw explains how cheaters are winning at online role-playing
games such as World of Warcraft where millions of players
compete in the virtual world to win battles or treasure that is
sometimes later sold to avid game players for real money.

Why we're losing the botnet battle
http://www.networkworld.com/nlvirusbug86026

Botnets -- they're dangerous, deceptive, and very difficult to
detect and deal with. What's more, according to recent surveys,
the botnet threat is growing...rapidly. Experts say it's
imperative that enterprises become aware of the acute and
growing dangers posed by botnets, and take decisive and
effective steps to counter them before it's too late. CIO,

Storm worm gets smarter

Newer variants of the widespread Storm worm have introduced a
new technique for evading security experts -- detecting when

Cisco: Vulnerability in Java Secure Socket Extension

Some versions of the Sun Java Secure Socket Extension (JSSE) do
not handle Transport Layer Security (TLS) or SSL handshakes

attack. Cisco's Unified Call Manager and Unified Presence

The Advent of the Computer Hacker Scene

The hacking scene is definitely not what it used to be. Though
it seems hard to remember, there was a time before

being turned into security companies. Symantec Security Response

darn it, BD.
i'm not changing my properties but as an Admin on Annexcafe, i will inform
everyone that you are banned from that private server also.
you should leave these nice folks alone to help others that really need it
and go play in your own group that Dave H. so kindly gave you.

Hello Dave

I trust you haven't followed /me/ here! (were you actively seeking ME?)
Hundreds of MS groups aren't there - HOW /did/ you find me?

Perhaps your intentions are good and you are trying to help me BUT when
you
say " Maybe if you don't understand the nature of things like this, you
should leave well alone?" .......... some might interpret that as a
veiled
threat.

You may or may not know any background. This is /not/ a game. Peter Foldes
is a totally unknown quantity, and consistently fails to answer simple,
polite requests. That, of course, is his prerogative but it leaves much
room
for doubt. Additionally, the 'Peter Foldes' who has posted on the
Annexcafe
sites has told lies - he was adamant that I lived in North America for
starters. If you want more background, go here:

When I checked a few minutes ago, this item had been read 2383 times!
Whilst
there really are bad guys around, I'm confident that there are far more
good
and honest ones. The bad guys /will/ be caught! :)

I see what you are driving at, David.
Maybe they are educated, and making educated guesses?
Or maybe you should look into reasons why they stretch to doing this.
Are you being a nuisance, making ridiculous claims, defaming or following
people onto other groups or servers? Those sort of things would do it.

BTW, when you enter a server like this, or another private nntp server,
you are dipping into their computer, they are allowing you to that.
Now I know what you are thinking, can the give you a virus or infection
via a download or link. No doubt it is possible, but then again many
people would also have done the same thing as you, and would be howling
for blood.
Maybe if you don't understand the nature of things like this, you should
leave well alone?

Now I run a private nntp server myself, done for just for the pleasure of
sharing, and knowing I can run a safe (as any can be) place, and would
find it insulting that you would consider myself, or any visitors, were
tricking you to install something. I would have to ban you for such
thoughts, or make it so you can't post such disruptive/paranoid things to
upset a community. I would also ban anyone that harmed another's
computer,
or at least prevent them from posting.

Phew! Thanks for all that, Phil! I really appreciate the time and
trouble you have taken to respond so comprehensively.

Dare I ask you for further comment? <g> I will anyway!

When posting to a newsgroup on a private server, it seems that
anyone/everyone can identify me, regardless of user name employed.
Whilst
I fully appreciate that an individual has a certain style (which can be
'fudged' - obfuscated, if you will) if the IP address changes as you say
(and I believe you!) can you suggest an alternate way they can identify
someone without having installed some form of 'reporting' malware on
one's PC?

I'd value your advice. TIA.

David
