I was hoping to avoid having to drag a problem computer back to base but
doing that and temporarily transferring the hard disk drive to my computer
to do a scan does now seem to be the better option.
If you do this a lot (as you may, as IMO every ill-defined problem
needs RAM, HD and malware exclusion as "the prelim") then it's better
to do this from a disposable installation or a read-only mOS like
Bart. You can take Bart out on field calls, but the downside of using
a total of 11 scanners is that the process can take > 24 hours.
If you drop the HD in your PC, there are two risks:
- your PC may corrupt an at-risk HD (Autochk, SR/SVI, etc.)
- a surface exploit could infect your PC
I'd rather not roll those dice :-)
