Earthlink (SBC Global) vs NAV on Mail Virus Detection

I had a problem with Earthlink (EL) recently, and their technician thought it might be solved if I disable NAV from checking my in/out mail for viruses. I balked, and he replied that their checker does that. Comments? I'm about to move over to SBC Global with our recent installation of DSL. Any comments on what mail protection they might provide?
