Re: Opinions sought re virus ?

on 29 Dec 2006, something possessed TaurArian [MS-MVP] to write:

|| If that's the case, why is Spybot detecting it as a threat? Weird.
|| It's not listed in add/remove. Not listed in the startup items.

| Good question. Based upon feedback, I often wonder why some are
| de-listed from
SpyWare
| Warrior.
| My feeling is if it was listed, avoid it.
|
| Have you tried looking in the Registry at...
|
| HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall
|
| You may find it there and look for the key; UninstallString

Have checked out a bit more - it appears that these registry keys
belong to Trend Micro PC-cillon.
I've just got rid of Nortons Internet Security and installed Trend on
my system and then installed Spybot - same results as the other
computer. This computer doesn't have a problem. My best guess is that
Trend has it's own version of CyberDefender. Might write to Trend to
confirm this. This would explain why Trend and Windows Defender were
not registering these keys.

Back to square 1.

Think I'll get the owner of the other computer to take it back into
the shop to examine it - beginning to think it could also be a
hardware problem. Will take one more look at the computer tomorrow and
examine the add/remove area and see what has been installed since the
original installation.

Strange. You'd think that given the wide use of both programs, that that
FP would be more visible (and soon to be fixed by Kolla, for that
matter).
