Opinions sought re virus ?

The computer is Windows Media Center 2005 - HP (not mine) running Trend fully
updated.
Computer totally freezes randomly. Nothing works. Have to reboot. That when I noticed
during boot up - there appears to be something like a little man running across the
screen prior to the Welcome screen appearing (whatever it is it's very quick). When
Windows is loading and the green bars are going across.
Dial up settings are not sticking - they are being ignored - such as disconnect when
no longer needed. Randomly, unable to use OE.
This flashing across the screen has appeared randomly whilst using the computer on
line (so the lady of the house reported).
Trend did not pick up anything (although I did remove temporary internet files).
Running an online scanner is impossible due to the rather slow connection and drop
outs.
I haven't gone any further with this at the moment due to time restrictions and will
look again at the computer next weekend.
Any suggestions of what I may be looking for?
Has anyone else had or seen something similar?
Anything in particular I can download and use on the computer to scan?
Any processes I should be looking for in Task Manager or anything in MSConfig,
Add/Remove etc.
Any assistance on this would be appreciated.
Like I say I won't be able to look at the computer again until next weekend due to
other comittments etc.
One other thing which may or may not be relevant, the man who actually owns the
computer complained of gross popups appearing on his compuer which disappeared when I
told him to clear out his TIF. This would have been about 1 1/2 weeks ago.
