Again, this has *nothing* to do with Java. Did you run the hard drive
diagnostic utility as David Lipman suggested? The age of your computer
has nothing to do with whether or not your hard drive has failed. In
fact, if hardware is going to fail it will usually do so pretty quickly
or go for years.

Run the drive diagnostic and do a thorough test. If the drive fails any
physical tests, replace it. If this isn't your cup of tea - and there
is no shame in admitting this - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

I went to the website for my drive, but either I don't have sense enough to
find the diagnostic tool or it is well hidden. Anyway, no joy there. I
will try again.

I have just replaced the hard drive on my old laptop, which was only a
couple of years old when it died, so I am familiar with that procedure. I
sure hate to have to replace another one. The only reason I bought this new
laptop is because the old one died while we were on our winter vacation and
thought we couldn't live without one. I wonder if it would still be under
warranty? I bought it from Best Buy and hope to God that I don't have to
deal with them on warranty issues. I swore never to darken their doors
again.
