Again, this has *nothing* to do with Java. Did you run the hard drive
diagnostic utility as David Lipman suggested? The age of your computer
has nothing to do with whether or not your hard drive has failed. In
fact, if hardware is going to fail it will usually do so pretty quickly
or go for years.

Run the drive diagnostic and do a thorough test. If the drive fails any
physical tests, replace it. If this isn't your cup of tea - and there
is no shame in admitting this - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).
