Yes, of course! Just go to shavlik.com. You will need to install
their software, and then you can have it scan and set it to download
all the patches.
I did it. On dialup, it only took about 4 hours.
Dial-up truly sucks, especially when you're charged per second to make
calls to your nearest ISP (as our telco does).
Shavlik created the Baseline Analysis tool for Microsoft, and offers
corporate update solutions. He has recently offered his program for
free to users with under 10 computers.
I like it. It's a fine alternative to Windows Update. And there's no
WGA -- "Prove you are not a thief!" or erroneous "invalid software"
messages. :-)
Awaiting your responses with baited breath, I remain, yours truly,
MS's automatic update is all very well if you are on broadband, but
it's impractical for dial-up users (especially if it costs money to
stay online). Intermittent Internet access is a mitigator against
direct network attack, but does nothing to reduce risks from
store-and-forward attacks (email, internal surfaces exposed when
handling content, etc.) so this matters.
A monthly update CD sent by the local MS distie would be a good way to
overcome this - or at the very least, such CDs could be distributed to
field techs (who don't always have broadband either).
In the absence of this, the local "warez bunny" becomes the usual
source of updates for dial-up victims, with all the risk that implies.
Speaking of risk; can you imagine how effective malware distribution
would be, if it managed to patch in to "updates"?
I expect automatic updates are hardened against this, starting from
bypassing DNS to reach the MS site directly. I'm not sure whether
Shavik can match this? The risk may be low while Shavik's channel is
uncommonly used, but if it were to become really popular, it may
attract the attention of malware coders and distributors.

Nice points as usual, Chris and I certainly am no fan of slow dial-up. It is nicer than not having Internet at all but definitely not great. Actually, I also prefer a cable connection to DSL because DSL always seemed to time out for me and cable does not seem to have this problem. Anyway, I am currently beginning testing on Windows Vista Ultimate for security issues. Do you have any suggestions about hardening security in Windows Vista that you want me to pass on to Microsoft or do they know your ideas already. <grin>
