Re: XP's Firewall

...as I just mentioned near the top of this thread, you may be disappointed
to note that recent free versions of ZA lock IE6's home page, and apparantly
/ only the paid version contains the facility to unlock it - VERY annoying.
....otherwise it's a very good firewall, and the paid version is superb.
Having said that, I found it too expensive and use other programs.

regards, Richard

Thanks for all the help. I have just switched over to Zone Alarm to try
it out and have disabled Windows Firewall. Zone Alarm seems to sit in the
Taskbar all the time is this right? I have gone to check updates and as
there was one I ran it and it appeared to give me and install a new vers
of the programme, I was expected a little update? One thing I notice that
my quick launch keys to IE and OE on my keyboard now do not function. I
guess there will be some instances of things not working the same now?

Did the Firewall with XP improve with SP2?

Pretty much. There is a good description of the most important
enhancements here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2netwk.mspx#EQSAE

Is it still not considered good enough to use?

Yes it is. What it claims to do, it does well.

Would it be best to use a third party free programme?

If you believe in "controlling outbound connections" being a security
meassure, then you would need a third party program, yes.

You could also disable unnescessary network services. Then you
would'nt need a personal firewall at all - just a good anti-malware
product.

Thanks You for any help.
