| Good day, all. About a week ago, I became infected with Alcra.C.
| First thing, of course, I checked with Symantec who claimed the
| removal was "easy". Right.
|
| Then I sought assistance from MVPs at the MS site and they were VERY
| helpful. Of course, that is not the right place to be carrying on
| virus conversations. Then one of them directed me here.
|
| I have isolated this hard disk and done Spyware Doctor and NAV scans
| on it. I also did the SYSCLEAN thing from TrendMicro which took HOURS
| to complete ... results: no virus. (I did the prework of cleaning
| out temp folders, shutting off Restore, emptying Internet temps and
| Firefox cache)
|
| So any reasonable person would assume this hard drive is virus free.
|
| I plug it back into the computer and shazamm, there pops up the NAV
| warning that w32.alcra.c is there. Most of the time it says that it
| has deleted what it found, and others it says it cannot delete them.
|
| This goes on until finally the computer has had enough and just quits
| responding whcih requires a hard shut down.
|
| Does anyone have experience with this particular variant of ALCRA? I
| have read some of the other variants in this newsgroup and their
| symptoms are all substantially different from mine.
|
| By the way, I wanted to try the David L. approach and use his AV
| scanner thing, but I believe that I have to go online to use this (so
| as to d/l the various AV softwares). And since it will not stay on
| long enough to go online, I have not. If there is another way to use
| this w/o requiring the infected machine to access the net, I am
| willing to give it a go.
|
| I have moved all my important stuff over to the laptop so I can
| continue working, so that dekstop is free for me to do what I need.
|
| You are kind to have read this far and kinder to actually post
| something helpful. :) I am truly grateful for any help you are
| willing to provide.
|
| Kindest regards,
|

If NAV/SAV is flagging a file as being infected with the W32.alrca.C then it would help to
specifically identify the file being flagged as infected.
In the meantime, use the following tool. Start with the McAfee and the the Sophos modules.
Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe
To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close
Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }
NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.
C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.
You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.
When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm
