Re: Boot Virus Help

Just to ask... how's that going so far? Got the problem over, or not?

Otherwise, my other (two-bit) suggestion for older / out-of-warranty /
second-hand PCs is to get an old HDD, install a cheap/free OS on it, and
load on system tools for when the "box goes bust". Only plug it in if the
main drive's kaput, with the main drive on secondary. Then you can at least
check to see if it's hardware or software.

Advised; new-computer owners or those with warranties still intact are -not-
advised to do this...

From the XP help files

FixbootWrites a new partition boot sector to the system partition. The
fixboot command is only available when you are using the Recovery Console.

fixboot [drive]

Parameter

drive

The drive to which a boot sector will be written. This replaces the
default
drive, which is the system partition you are logged on to. An example of a
drive is:

D:

Example

The following example writes a new partition boot sector to the system
partition in drive D:

fixboot d:

Note

Using the fixboot command without any parameters will write a new
partition
boot sector to the system partition you are logged on to.

I seem to have a nasty boot virus on my PC that is preventing me from
fully
starting up my hard drive. I already tried my boot disks and booting
with
my
antivirus software to scan the drive, neither of them have worked. I
have
Windows XP professional. What happens is, I start up, and it gets all
the
way
to the Windows XP loading screen in which there is a bar and a blue
loader
that moves across the bar. It is on this screen for about 5 seconds or
so
and
then after that for a split second there is a Blue screen that flashes
in
which white lettering and numbers slides down the screen, the computer
then
restarts on it's own. It will continue going through this process over
and
over again preventing me from "fully" starting up the PC. I've never
ever
seen this blue screen before, and assume it is a virus preventing me
from
starting up Windows XP and my hard drive. Any suggestions besides
re-formatting my hard drive?
