Lauching The Wrong Program!

I have a VERY strange problem, and was wondering whether it could be a
virus. When some programs are launched (ie. double clicked) they
launch completely different programs, and then when the program is
closed they launch the correct program. I tried it as two different
users, and they seem to have the problem with different programs. With
one user the computer lauched Photoshop when a USB stick (with no
images) was inserted instead of the correct things. When Outlook was
started, the Front Page installer started (clicked cancel, and then
Outlook launched).

At the time I was moving the computer onto a different domain (new
fileserver etc). I did a direct copy of the profile (ie. C:\Documents
& Settings\User -> C:\Documents & Settings\User.NEWDOMAIN). I have
found this copying to cause problems with some machines (I've had real
nightmares already), but can't see how it could cause these problems.
Any ideas why Windows (XP Pro) is behaving like this?

The machine appeared to be behaving before moving to the new domain,
but this problem seems to be present with both the domain user and
local user. I haven't been able to go back the original user (on a
different domain) either, but I don't think this is related.
