Re: Can't Log on: multiple XP security and/or virus issues

hold on there. this is an "ibm trained systems architect". they're
not even going to *think* about doing anything to your PC unless
someone pays them their consultancy fee!

seriously, if someone's had physical access, all bets are off. AV and
spyware scans *might* detect nasties, but might not - and you'll never
be sure. do a few scans to look for evidence, change all your
passwords (don't pick anything obvious, either: use strong, mixed
alphanumeric ones), and get windows reinstalled. change your router's
password, too, and turn off router admin over the internet as well.
to reinstall windows, backup your data files to CD or DVD, then boot
off the XP CD to install and delete all partitions on the hard disk and
recreate one (i'd advise at this point creating two: one for windows,
and one for data. that way if this happens again you can reinstall
windows without touching the other partition). it'd be helpful to have
your drivers for your hardware on CD at this point, too.

you might want to go ask this guy some pointed questions if you turn up
any evidence of naughtiness...
