Re: WinFixer 2005

Finding newsgroup messages:
Two main choices
#1. Use your newsreader; the directions are in the 'Help' file of
Outlook Express. The search function of Outlook Express will only search
headers you have download, and search posts you have downloaded.

#2. Use Google. Google will search across newsgroups and will
search ALL posts from a few hours from the present to years in the past.
a. Google has the archieves of all Usenet newsgroups (and
defacto Usenet newsgroups like the microsoft.public.* constellation. These
google archieves extend years into the past, while news servers hold posts
for a limited time that depends on who is maintaining the server.
b. To use Google newsgroup search to search in Usenet
newsgroups
(1.) go to http://www.google.com/
(2.) left click on [groups] (above the fill-in
slot)
(3.) right click on [advanced search] (to the
right of the 'Search Groups' button
(4.) fill in the search information in the
appropriate slots
(5.) Example searches
(a.) entering
microsoft.public.security.virus in the 'Group' slot
AND
David H. Lipman in the
'Author' slot
returns ~ 3330 cites
(b.) entering the words [ virus
remove ] in the 'with all of the words' slot
AND
microsoft.public.security.virus
in the 'Group' slot
AND
David H. Lipman in the
'Author' slot
returns ~ 534 cites
(c.) entering the words [ Swen
worm ] in the 'with all of the words' slot
AND
microsoft.public.security.virus
in the 'Group' slot
AND
Phil Weldon in the 'Author'
slot
returns ~ 261 cites.

I think form this you can see that David H. Lipman is a very frequent poster
(in fact I am suprised there were not a lot more cites). Though I have
worked with computers since 1965, my experience with malware is fairly
limited, and I try to restrain my posts to subjects with which I have some
experience.

Keep in mind that 'Google Groups' are not the same as Usenet newsgroups, and
tend to be frequented by less knowledgeable users.

I use the google search to find information and ALSO to check the
reliability of posters based on looking at the range of what they have
posted and checking some of the replies. Of course, some posters change
their name quite often to defeat this kind of check-up.

I hope this helps, and makes newsgroups more valuble to you.

Phil Weldon

| Again, thank you for your help in my time of need. There is one thing
that
| I am going to have to do, and that is to learn more on how to use the
| newsgroups. I don't know how to search in Outlook Express for past
| discussions on the problem at hand. If I had I might have found the post
by
| Jim Byrd. I did contact the person by e-mail on McAfee Forum that was
| supposed to have developed the tool that you sent to me. He e-mailed me
| back and said that it would be impossible for someone else to take credit
| for the work he had done because he had a welcome screen at the beginning
of
| the fix. I don't remember seeing that welcome screen, but my memory is
not
| what it used to be. Anyway, no matter to me who wrote the thing, it
worked,
| and I appreciate very much the help.
