| I've never really fully grasped the distinctions between the types of
| threat which my various 'anti-malware' programs protect me against, so
| the following is probably embarrassingly obvious!
|
| I regularly run Adaware SE and Spybot, and did so this morning. No
| threats were detected.
| I have BHO Demon running, 'in residence'. No new entries have
| appeared.
|
| I have Norton AntiVirus auto-protect enabled, and very rarely see
| anything from it. But at some point (actually it was while I was
| running Spybot, but I was doing other things too) I got this:
|
| Norton AntiVirus has detected a virus on your computer.
| Object Name: C:\WINDOWS\iun6002.exe
| Virus Name: Trojan.Dropper
| Action Taken: Unable to repair this file... it has been quarantined.
|
| Could the experts here please advise me:
| 1. What is this trojan and where is it likely to have come from?
| 2. Why didn't Spybot report it?
| 3. Does AdAware not detect trojans?
| 4. Can I go one step further than this 'quarantining', and get it off
| my PC completely?
|
| Much appreciate any advice please.

1. Trojan.Dropper --
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.dropper.html

It is a generic detection for a Trojan responsible for going out and obtaing other Trojans
like Keyloggers and Backdoors. The "Dropper" part means it will go out and get other
malware. No one can determine where it came from. However, it is a Trojan and that means
you got it based upon YOUR actions on the internet.

2. SpyBot specailizes on non-viral malware in the class of adware/spyware. Trojans while
not true viruses are classed as viruses and anti virus software is best at finding them.
That why you need both anti spyware and antio virus.

3. Same answer as #2.

4. Yes

You can use the following Multi AV Command Line Scanner front end utility to scan your
computer

After you execute Multi_AV.exe you'll find a folder called; C:\AV-CLS

In the folder C:\AV-CLS you will find the file; killproc.txt [ C:\AV-CLS\killproc.txt ]

Open it in your text editor (double click on the killproc.txt file) and append to the list
iun6002.exe and then save the file.

It should then have the following contents...

iexplore.exe
firefox.exe
iun6002.exe

Then follow the rest of the below instructions...

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

It is a self-extracting ZIP file that contains the Kixtart Script Interpreter {
http://kixtart.org Kixtart is CareWare } three batch files, five Kixtart scripts, one Link
(.LNK) file, a PDF instruction file and two utilities; UNZIP.EXE and WGET.EXE. It will
simplify the process of using; Sophos, Trend and McAfee Anti Virus Command Line Scanners to
remove viruses, Trojans and various other malware.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode. This
way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor’s web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Exit the menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file.

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.
