'PattiChati' posted, in part:

It is a good idea to read some posts in a newsgroup before posting. This
will give you an idea of the character of a newsgroup, and you may also find
questions already answered. Many times, in fact. Your exact question, in
fact. The thread, for example, that began 27JUN05 with 'Which Virus Program
To Get' from 'boaz' and generated dozens of posts.

Also consider that all posters are not equally knowledgeable. Generally in
a 'technical' newsgroup something like 'peer review' takes place. If good
information is posted then it stands. If bad information is posted, then
objections are raised. For you to post a comment like "I was just hoping to
hera from some other people, I thanked you for your input. I open up the
topic and see all these names and was excited because I though I got that
much feedback - instead it was a couple of guyes fighting over the internet.
I was just hoping for more feedback. Thank you." is sorta off the point.
After all, there is hardly any need for more than a few posts - after all
the question has been recently discussed at length, and there are fewer than
a dozen resonable recommendations. Duplication isn't really necessary.
What you've just seen is a case of 'peer review.' One poster indulges in
dangerous practices. What could be more dangerous than downloads that could
be infectors? One recent and prominent Internet worm, 'Swen', distributed
very convincing fake Microsoft security patches which were actually an
infective worm. These infective patches are distributed by posts to
newsgroups and by email. You should be VERY careful about where you obtain
security applications. That is also the reason the the creators and
publishers of security programs are VERY careful to control how their work
is distributed, even if it is at no charge. Some individuals, for one
reason or another, set up sites that may or may not offer malware along with
applications for which permission to distribute has been granted;
applications for which there is no guarantee of freedom from infection
(which is why sites that DO have permission must link to the home site.

It is easy to check the presence and reputation of a poster in a newsgroup
like this. Just sort the posts by author, check the quantity, a scan a few
replies. 'David H. Lipman' did you a favor by warning against whoever he or
she was (the signiture of the individual changes) dangerous practices.
'DHL' is without a doubt the most prolific poster to this newsgroup and is
certainly well received AND well respected.

Google newsgroup searches can also be an interesting way of checking, if not
bona fides, at least the ratio of helpful contributions:heat, noise, smoke,
and dubious practices. You'll find over 3000 posts by 'David H. Lipman', 7
by 'id' .
