I have a friend that has an 18mo old HP desktop that is likely to have many
virus problems.
He purchased Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Firewall and installed (I think
both) without removing his older version of Norton Anti Virus. Now he is
unable to scan for viruses nor can he un-install the Norton products.
We've discussed some of his options such as un-installing and/or scanning
for viruses while booted in safe mode.
My question is... is it possible to remove his hard drive and temporarily
installing (as slave) it in a clean machine running Norton system works 2002
with updated virus definitions and doing a full drive scan to clean it up.
Then putting it back in his HP, booting from it, un-install all Norton
products as well as any other anti-virus applications. Then do another
pre-installation scan (from the install CD or the Norton online scanner) and
installing his new anti-virus / firewall applications.
I have this "clean" machine at work not being used anymore and the case is
open, so it would be simple enough for me to do this.
Does anyone know if this is an acceptable approach? Or is this begging for
more problems.
Thanks for your help!
